It takes no more than 30 seconds spent talking with Jacksonville Police Department patrol officer Kyle Seeger to get caught up in his infectious enthusiasm.
Seeger, 23, is a Jacksonville hometown boy, a 2018 Jacksonville High School graduate who found he had a knack for stressful situations while working as a Piedmont Rescue Service ambulance driver. Seeger always knew he wanted to be involved in law enforcement, thanks to a youth spent watching his grandfather, Johnny Fortune, work with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Seeger joined the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office in 2019 and worked there as a road deputy until September 2022, when he came back home to Jacksonville.
“Seeing everybody I know and people who grew up knowing me has been kind of cool; them seeing how I’ve changed into an adult,” Seeger said Thursday at the Public Safety Complex, clad in the police department’s black patrol uniform, a big grin across his face.
Just a short while before, he’d been part of a traffic stop that yielded drugs and firearms, and had been watching detectives interview the “suspect” — the man had confessed almost immediately after he pulled up to a police checkpoint, Seeger said — and laughed and nodded when asked if his job was exciting enough.
Seeger’s life has been full of excitement lately, with the introduction of Henlee, he and wife Ryleigh’s first daughter, who was born only a month ago. When he’s not on patrol in his distinct white Ford Taurus, the only one of its kind in the JPD patrol fleet — and its fastest, Seeger notes, grinning — he’s at home with Henlee and Ryleigh, he said; he and Ryleigh like to go hunting, fishing and just about anything else if it’s outdoors.
He met Ryleigh at the emergency room where she works — and where he was keeping an eye on an inmate. The two struck up a conversation and discovered they were perfect for one another shortly after meeting up in a less chaotic environment.
“Most guys my age aren’t looking to settle down, but those two are my reasons now to get home,” Seeger said. “They’re my rock in this job.”
