New Business: A Fresh Start Counseling

Jacksonville native and licensed professional counselor Dorothy McDermott and her team are back in Jacksonville after a year spent working in Calhoun County.

McDermott, a graduate of Jacksonville State University, said she knew early in life that she wanted to help people, even if she wasn’t sure how. She recalled being a senior at Jacksonville High School, filling out her senior memory book, confronted with the question, “what do you want to do for your career?”

“I didn’t know for sure what I would do,” McDermott said, sitting in the lobby of her counseling service, A Fresh Start Counseling, beside KT Pho on the west side of Public Square. “So I wrote that I wanted to be helping people; no matter what the job, I knew I wanted to help people.”

Decades after the decision to dedicate herself to helping, McDermott is a full-time counselor and the published author of “Get Well: A Fresh Perspective on Mental Wellness,” a common language explanation of common issues that hinder wellness.
